Cardinal Francis George was at the Pope’s side throughout the visit. The Cardinal gives his insight on Pope Benedict’s US tour in this very special edition of The Church, the Cardinal and You, a monthly production of the Television and Radio Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

IT'S OFFICIAL! ARCHDIOCESE’S CATECHESIS STANDARDS APPROVED! Minimize

The USCCB Commission on Certification and Accreditation has granted official approval of the revised Archdiocesan Standards and Process for Certification of Catechetical Leaders. This is a significant endorsement for the Archdiocese of Chicago and one that comes after decades of work and refinement involving thousands of priests, religious and lay leaders throughout the Archdiocese.

It was during the mid-1990s that the DECISIONS PROCESS spawned the Special Task Force on Catechesis. In 2000, Cardinal George authorized that Task Force to study the state of catechesis in the Archdiocese. The result was the 2002 Catechetical Recommendations, implemented by the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry. As the implementation continued, so did the revisions, resulting in the 2005 Guidelines for Catechetical Leaders, which includes standards for the certification of directors and coordinators of religious education for the parish, Catholic schools and youth ministry. These Guidelines were submitted for review to the USCCB in January of 2006. Congratulations to the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry and to all who participated in bringing these Guidelines into being.

NEW CHAIR OF THEOLOGY AT MUNDELEIN HONORS CARDINAL GEORGE Minimize

The Francis Cardinal George Chair of Faith and Culture has been established at the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary to address the critical area of Christianity’s place in public life and cultural consciousness. Initial funding for the chair comes from a bequest from the estate of an alumnus of Mundelein Seminary.

The Very Rev. Dennis Lyle, Rector of Mundelein Seminary, in announcing the creation of this academic chair, also announced the appointment of Fr. Robert Barron as the First George Professor. Father Barron, presently Chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology, will assume the new position July 1, 2008. The appointment will allow Fr. Barron to offer a series of public lectures each year as a way of bringing Catholic thought to a wider audience, something he has been doing periodically since Cardinal George established 2006 as the "Year of Evangelization".

Everyone's Files Need A Strategic Plan! Minimize

Walking through the 3rd Floor recently, you may have noticed a sign, “Pardon our dust…we’re archiving.”  In preparation for the move, the Archives and Records Center worked collaboratively with the Office of Research and Planning to identify inactive records and minimize space requirements.  Jean Welter and her staff weeded duplicate copies, boxed up inactive records, and destroyed nearly 1,200 lbs of paper.  That’s approximately 50 cubic feet of space or about 6 four-drawer filling cabinets.  Another 42 boxes (or roughly 25 vertical file drawers) were sent to storage at the Archives and Records Center.  All told, approximately 101 cubic feet of office space was saved.

Research and Planning joins a select group of departments working with Archives staff to develop a strategic plan for their records in anticipation of the move.  Other departments in various stages of the records survey process include: the Department of Personnel Services, Human Resources, New World Publications, the Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry, the Office of Catholic Schools, and Bishop Kane’s Vicariate II Administrative Office.  We affirm these departments for their commitment to record keeping.   The Archives looks forward to assisting other offices prepare for the move.

To schedule an appointment to discuss how best to keep, archive or move your agency or department files, contact Jac Treanor (312-831-0711, Ext. 873) at the Archives and Records Center.
